Next Time, I'm Writing In "Batman."

No post-election commentary from me (although I will confess myself pleased with the results), but I did want to share this great bit of timely humor: Election Day 2006 - Whose Side Is Your Favorite Superhero On? I'm not even that big a fan of either politics or superhero comics, but this cracked me up completely.

  1. I seem to recall back in 1994 the pundits were calling the Democratic controlled House lazy, inept and corrupt. You really need viable third and fourth options. Not that it does us all that much good, but it seems to work elsewhere.

  2. We desperately need more options, IMO. Or at least different ones. I'm not all that thrilled with the Democrats, myself, but have been rooting for them because at least they're less awful than the Republicans... who are, to be frank about it, currently scaring the living crap out of me.

Politics in the US really does seem to have degenerated entirely to a choice of the lesser of two evils, and it sucks. I'm tempted to start voting Libertarian. Not that I don't have serious problems with them, too, but given that they stand no chance of ever getting elected, it doesn't actually matter very much, does it?

  3. You're right they are both corrupt, I'm on the other side though I think the Republicans are better. However, I really like the Libertarians. I mean ok some of the ideas are wacky but I generally find myself agreeing with the Libertarian candidate. Everyone was celebrating at work, the democratic wins, Rumsfeld stepping down. I needed some armed protection being the only Republican in Portland :)

  4. I can understand that... Heck, I kind of want to kick your ass. ;) (No, seriously, even if one agrees with a lot of their general aims, I do personally think that supporting the Repulicans is hard to defend at this point -- and frankly icky -- given Bush's disregard of both habeus corpus and the Geneva convention. Plus, Bush's daddy says that I don't deserve American citizenship because he doesn't like my religious beliefs, and it's really hard not to take that personally. Or to be a little bit scared by it once his offspring starts deciding that anybody he declares an "enemy combatant" can be held indefinitely in secret, without trial, and tortured. The Democrats may be stupid, but, by my morality, at least, the Republicans are rapidly approaching evil, and I'll take incompetence over malice any day. We've dealt with incompetence in government since government was invented, but once the men in the shiny boots start kicking down doors in the middle of the night and "disappearing" people, the noble American experiment is over, and I honestly do think we're at the top of that slope right now. It scares me way the hell more than terrorists. And, um, geez, I hadn't meant to get into this rant, I really hadn't... And, hey, I still love you anyway, even if I want to beat you over the head with a copy of the Constitution now. :))

Anyway, if I could ever find a party that believed strongly in civil liberties but didn't want to institute a nanny state and police us all for political correctness, and that also believed that it's actually a good thing for the government to do stuff like fund basic scientific research and help out the poor, I wouldn't just vote for them, I'd probably campaign for them. I can't understand why they don't exist...

  5. I am always baffled by the American understanding of left and right wing politics.

  7. You should run on the "truth, justice, and kittens" platform. I would vote for you. :)
